Thesis

Master of Surgery Thesis
The Institute of Cancer Research, London University

My thesis was researched at The Institute of Cancer Research, The Royal Marsden Hospital and Mayday University Hospital. The thesis examined the interaction between CD44 and the enzymes matrix metalloproteinases, which have an important action in the development of metastasis and angiogenesis in colorectal cancer. It was a study looking at changes occurring during colorectal cancer disease progression and measuring blood factors as a predictor of disease stage and response to chemoradiotherapy. Experiments were also performed to change gene expression in colorectal cancer cells to alter the metastatic ability of cancer cells. Work form this project was presented at The Surgical Research Society; The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland; The Association of Coloproctology; The European Association of Coloproctology; Digestive Disease Week, USA and at other national and international meetings, and as original papers.
